Liquid Nitrogen is distributed on a self-serve basis, in Tech Room EB42. Users need to have a valid Chartstring, and need to have a WildCard authorized in the FOM system. Cards can be authorized by the Manager of the Facility, Steve Jacobson, in EB48, right next door. Once users have access, they can fill their dewars at any time, 24/7/365, barring unforeseen circumstances, such as elevator shutdowns. The E-wing elevator is the only elevator for this part of the building. Stairways 15, 16, and 17 also provide access, though they are not suitable for moving dewars. Please see Steve for any problems encountered while attempting to enter the room or dispense LN2. Steve can also provide assistance and training in the safe handling of Liquid Nitrogen and Liquid Helium, and with minor dewar problems.
Liquid Helium is available on a self-serve basis, but dewars are filled only by Facility staff. We would greatly appreciate having a week’s prior notice when you’re going to need Liquid Helium, though we can usually accommodate your needs on a much shorter time-frame. If you will be needing several dewars at one time, e.g. when cooling a cryostat for the first time or cooling down a magnet, please let us know as far in advance as possible, so that we can be sure there will be sufficient liquid available for you and for the other users.
